Is Multitasking Truly Evil?

leave a comment »

Is multitasking the evil many people are beginning to believe it to be? No… according to this post on Web Worker Daily. Describing multitasking as still doing one thing at a time, but switching back and forth between tasks frequently, the post proposes that multitasking although not suited for every task is can be effective as alternate mode of productivity. This form of productivity is described as connected mode productivity. This form of productivity can be learned, refined and taught. When done well, according to the author, multitasking or connected mode productivity can be efficient and in the authors words: “enriching.”

I would agree with most of this article’s conclusions, multitasking can be efficient if done well, and applied to the appropriate tasks. I find it difficult at times to effectively multitask myself at times, and find that I have to pay attention to when doing several things at once or even in small bites is doing to much. If I pay attention to my health, sleep well, eat right, and am truly alert and not just propped up by caffeine I can multitask with the best of them. If I am tired, hungry or distracted by outside influences, multitasking only serves to make me more than irritable. I find that it is important under these circumstances to pay attention to the cues and take a break or dial it down and simplify my own activities when multitasking becomes counter-productive.
