My Favorite Hamburger Joint

You never know what kinds of memories a journey through Flickr will stir up. This afternoon I stumbled across this pic of the Denton County Hamburger Company. When I was a student at North Texas (UNT), this was absolutely my favorite place in town to get a cheeseburger.
Like Pavlov’s favorite dog… my taste buds began to salivate immediately upon seeing this photo while neurons flashed with sensory memories of cheddar cheese and pickles piled high on a giant cheeseburger.
Mmmmm… I wonder if Southwest Airlines is running any good specials on last minute flights to Dallas in the morning? If I get lucky… maybe I can be in Denton in time for Dinner tomorrow night!
CourtHouse in Denton

In a nostalgic mood, this morning… I found this great picture of the County CourtHouse in Denton, Texas while browsing on flickr. I lived in Denton for almost ten years while attending and working for the University of North Texas. It’s been almost that long since I left Denton, but I would recognize this venerable castle of a courthouse any time.
Thanks to Krystal Pritchett for posting this photo. It’s one of the best photos of the old courthouse on Flickr… and there are quite a few.
Corn Kits!

Strange what you’ll hang onto when it comes to memories of past homes and villages gone by. One such memory is the old Morrison Corn Kits factory in Denton Texas. I found this photo online while crawling on Flickr this evening. I remember passing this local landmark many times in my daily travels around my old college home.
Save Fry Street’s Legacy
Apparently Fry Street is in more danger than I thought. (I really should get down to Texas more often I guess) For some of us former Fry Street junkies that have moved on to other pastures… here is a link to another site advocating the effort to save Fry Street's legacy at: savefrystreet.com
Memories of Denton
The city of Denton Texas and my memories of it have always had a unique place in my heart. I lived there for over ten years in the late 1980's and well into the 90's. I went to college and worked at the University of North Texas (UNT). Many years before that My high school graduation ceremony was held at the basketball coliseum of what was then North Texas State University (later re-designated as UNT.) Even before I found my way to UNT I spent many weekend night haunting various venues near Fry Street or hanging out with the Sammy's and their later incarnation the Delta Lodge. I came to know the place well. Read the rest of this entry »
Fry Steet on Flickr
Faithful readers my recall that I am a big fan of the "annual" festival and sometimes bane of Denton Texas known as the Fry Street Fair. This musical rite of Spring in held adjacent to my alma mater the University of North Texas is an decades old production of the Delta Lodge and features many local and regional bands, artisans and colorful characters.Although it has been many years since I have been able to attend myself, I still have many fond memories floating around in what is left of my brain cells.
Feeling a bit nostalgic for the event, I checked on flick for any photographic evidence available from this years event and discovered this nice slide-show posted by digitalreflections. If you are a far flung fan of the event as are I, perhaps you will enjoy seeing the photos.
Vicariously Fry Street
Stuck up here in Buffalo as spring approached the rest of the country, my thought's turned to Denton's (often semi-)annual Fry Street Fair earlier this month. I missed it myself but have more than my share of legal fun there over the years. Today while surfing I came across this site with pictures of this year's events. Let's all live vicariously through them shall we? Check out Fry Street on Cool Cities USA.
Fry Street
Coming up this weekend is the best damn street fair in all of the known universe… Fry Street Fair.
Fry Street is an all day / evening music and art event put on in Denton Texas. The Fair is "organized" by the Delta Lodge, a student social organization often precariously affiliated with the University of North Texas.
I haven't had the good fortune to be in Denton in April in quite a few years but I can tell you that if the event is half as good as it was in it's heyday, Fry Street Fair is an event that shouldn't be missed. Especially if you appreciate exposure to local and regional musical talent.
Check FSF 2006 out if you have the chance. You won't regret it… Assuming you are lucky enough to remember it the next day.
